Welcome to Shirley Chisholm Elementary School! ¡Bienvenidos a la Escuela Primaria de Shirley Chisholm! We are grateful you are here.

Led by our families and PTA leaders, our school community engaged in a transformational process to dismantle former slave owner, John Tyler, as our school’s namesake. With bold initiative and a spirit of unity, we committed to affirm our diverse identity and our true values.

On January 9th, 2024, the DC Council voted and approved our school name change from John Tyler to Shirley Chisholm Elementary School.

We recognize this is history in the making. This name change course-corrects our school’s story, which started in 1890. This name change offers hope for the realities of social justice.
